The city of Reno is addressing a vandalism incident at Virginia Lake that temporarily caused water levels to rise higher than usual.
City officials reported that the increase was due to vandalism that disabled a key outlet valve at the lake. This valve is part of Virginia Lake’s drainage and low-flow circulation system, which helps regulate water levels and maintain water quality. When the valve was blocked, water was not properly circulating, allowing levels to rise and increasing the risk of harmful algae blooms.
