Protest Over Wells Ave Bridge Unfolds Without Injuries, Contrary to Wellness Check on Michael Johnson

There were lots of Reno police officers and vehicles yesterday at the bottom of the bridge and on the bridge as protesters walked over it to honor Michael J. Johnson a Black man killed by police on February 3rd after a wellness check gone terribly and tragically wrong.

Pedestrians aren’t allowed on the bridge, so during their first pass at the exact time Johnson was shot to death by police, Reno PD blocked it off to traffic in both directions, after protesters had walked half its distance, with motorists waving, honking and raising fists in solidarity.

Community advocate Lily Baran noted no one was injured during the protest action, calling it “a wildly effective community lead de-escalation training for Reno Police Department the exact time of day and location of the incident that resulted in the killing of a 27 year old Black man on the third day of Black history month, and hospitalization of their own officer due to gunshot wound from their co worker…
