Wind and snow put LED traffic lights to the test

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -Snowstorms like the one on February 17, 2026, put some of our traffic light system to the test; particularly those which use LEDS.

Many local cities, including Reno use the LEDS because they use less energy and the bulbs do not have to be changed frequently. It saves municipalities millions of dollars.

But the major drawback occurs when it’s windy and snowy. The bulbs do not get hot. That leaves snow to accumulate over the lights, making the lights tough to see…
