Warm temps speed snowmelt, boosting river flows as crews watch for localized flooding

Unseasonably warm temperatures are accelerating snowmelt across northern Nevada, sending more water into rivers and streams and prompting officials to keep a close eye on flooding concerns.

The recent warmup comes on the heels of a strong winter storm that dropped significant snow in the mountains and some accumulation in lower elevations. As that snow melts, water levels are rising on area waterways.

For many longtime residents, the situation brings back memories of the historic 1997 flood along the Truckee River. But meteorologists say this is not a repeat of that event…
