City of Reno to cut positions, raise fees to balance budget with $24 million deficit

Reno leaders say they have found a way to balance next year’s budget despite a projected $24 million structural deficit, but it will require spending cuts, job freezes and higher fees.

City officials said the forecasted deficit for the next fiscal year remains $24 million and has not changed in recent months. They attributed the gap to slow revenue growth due to inflation, which they said has constrained financial resources heading into the budget cycle.

To pass a balanced budget, which is required by state law, the city plans to cut $19.2 million in spending. Leaders said they will aim to save 2% through vacant staff positions, keep some roles frozen and reduce expenses using a zero-based budgeting approach.

The city is also freezing eight additional jobs that have been vacant all year. That would leave 36 positions unfunded for fiscal year 2027, saving more than $4.5 million…
