Forest Service to burn more than 800 acres in Dog Valley area

With spring weather creating favorable conditions, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is preparing to move forward with a series of prescribed fire projects aimed at reducing hazardous fuels and lowering wildfire risk across parts of western Nevada and eastern California.

Prescribed burning operations could begin as early as March and continue through May, pending final approvals and daily weather evaluations. Forest officials say prescribed fire is a proactive tool used to reduce overgrown vegetation and help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from catastrophic wildfires.

Projects planned this spring include approximately 826 acres of understory prescribed burning in several locations within the Dog Valley Fuels Reduction Project area west of Verdi, Nevada, located in Sierra County, California…
