RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The Reno Police Department is planning a dedicated DUI team and patrols for St. Patrick’s Day weekend and the annual Leprechaun Crawl in downtown Reno.
Public Information Officer Hunter Mercurio said the DUI unit will be “out and about checking for drunk drivers,” along with patrol officers in the area. He is urging people who plan to drink to arrange a designated driver, use a ride share service such as Uber or Lyft, or ride public transportation through RTC instead of getting behind the wheel.
Mercurio said the department’s goal is to prevent serious crashes, not just issue citations. He noted the most severe consequence of a DUI is causing a wreck that seriously injures or kills someone. Drivers also face heavy fines, possible jail time and mandatory DUI classes that can affect their lives for years…
