Kyler Klix: Improve your quality of life with the outdoors in Carson City

What’s your favorite part about living in Carson City? For many, it’s the access to the outdoors and the beautiful scenery. That’s a reward for many of us, but if you needed a little more motivation to get outside and get moving, the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department has prizes to earn. All you must do is hike a minimum of five trails selected on the list.

The Parks & Rec Department is hosting its third annual trails challenge from March 28 to Nov. 1. There’s an opening ceremony on Saturday with guest speakers at Silver Saddle Ranch followed by an interpretive walk afterward which will count toward one of the five hikes required to be eligible for a prize. Check out the guidebook online for details on how to complete the challenge.

According to the parks department, the trails challenge originated because of the Quality of Life initiative, which celebrates 30 years in 2026. The initiative put in place a ¼-cent sales tax to provide dedicated funding to acquire open space land and develop and maintain new park and recreation facilities, including trails. Since the inception of the QOL, Carson City has acquired over 7,000 acres of open space to protect floodplains, watershed, and wildlife habitat; preserve our amazing views; and provide abundant recreational opportunities…
