Reno Police warns residents of property theft trends

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – As more people hit the road for vacations, the Reno Police Department is warning residents of property theft. “Number 1, let your neighbors know that you are going on vacation. Community watch is the biggest benefit that we have locally. Make sure your neighbors know. On top of that, if you are going on vacation, make sure to leave those exterior lights on. If you can have somebody like a family member or a friend come check on your house, or do a drive-by. Keep some lights on to let people know that you’re home. Don’t let your house be an easy target,” said Public Information Officer Hunter Mercurio, Reno Police Department.

RPD reports a .25% decrease in property theft between 2024 and 2025. However, crime typically increases during the warmer months.

“With property crimes around Reno, we see them a lot at local malls, shopping centers or big-name businesses,” added the Officer. “Sometimes we will see people who are coming over the hill, go into stores to steal a bunch of stuff and then head back over to California.”…
