Council approves south Reno battery storage project near homes

A 200-megawatt lithium-ion battery energy storage system was approved 4-2 Wednesday when the Reno City Council voted to adopt a 54-acre land annexation for the project.

The “Trego Grid” project will be directly east of the Talus Valley housing complex in south Reno off South Meadows Parkway on roughly 25 acres. It will connect to NV Energy’s existing Mira Loma substation south of the development.

The project’s use as a battery facility or a “major utility” was previously approved by the planning commission in March. With the planning commission’s approval, the developer already has the conditional use permit to use the land for a battery energy storage facility…
