RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Richmond officials said Friday that the earliest crews are expected to finish removing the derailed train cars from the city’s canal is this weekend, marking the latest update in the weeklong recovery effort following the downtown train derailment.
Crews have been working to empty the grain carried by the rail cars before they can be safely removed from the canal.
While the cleanup continues, several road closures remain in place. North 18th Street between East Main and East Franklin streets, as well as North 22nd Street, remain closed. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
Officials said all of the derailed train cars have now been removed from the tracks. CSX crews are repairing the damaged track as work shifts to removing the remaining cars from the canal…
