Hopewell says it remains safe to flush toilets in the city after a sewer main break was discovered during a routine morning check July 14 at one of the pump stations.
According to a statement from city spokesperson Kyle English, public works crews are excavating the site of the break at the 1st Street pump station to assess the amount of damage and determine plans for repair. In the meantime, he said, residents should not see any interruption in normal wastewater service.
The overflow was discovered around 6 a.m., English said. Workers immediately began to address it, and the city has notified the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality of the spillage, which does not appear to have triggered any environmental alarms…
