Petersburg transit riders face heat as city fixes buses

Petersburg Area Transit says it is “actively addressing” issues with air conditioning on its buses after a Hopewell resident emailed every single member of the Petersburg and Hopewell city council complaining that the buses were too hot to ride, according to copies of the emails received by The Progress-Index.

In the latest response to the citizen’s email, City Manager March Altman chalked up the issues to the aging fleet of buses in PAT’s inventory and said PAT administration and maintenance staff were doing their best to stay in front of the problems.

“The buses and HVAC systems are inspected promptly, diagnosed, and scheduled for repair based on the nature of the failure, parts availability, and shop capacity,” Altman wrote in his July 17 response. “Our maintenance staff is working diligently each day to repair and return vehicles to service as quickly as possible.”…
