Common restaurant violations the Virginia Department of Health issues during routine inspections

I have published a series of articles about the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) routine restaurant inspections. I have noticed some common violations and corrective actions.

  • Richmond’s Slay Burger had 4 violations.
  • Chester’s Chipotle had 5 violations.
  • Richmond’s KFC had 6 violations.
  • Southern Kitchen had 9 violations.

A customer commented on one of the articles that he doesn’t rely on VDH to point out what’s wrong because he can look around and spot a violation. He might be able to spot some of the aesthetics in the dining room but not the significant number of critical health violations found in the kitchen.

“A clean front-of-house does not guarantee a safe back-of-house.”

What Customers See (Aesthetic)

It is a common misconception that a glance around a restaurant’s dining area is enough to judge its safety. While swept floors, wiped tables, and clean menus are excellent indicators of good customer service and basic housekeeping, they do not reflect a restaurant’s actual food safety compliance.

What Inspectors Find (Safety)

Customers will not know what the Virginia Department of Health inspectorsfind unless they see thereport of the violations and the corrective actionsthat become public information online.
