Richmond’s Diamond District just landed another restaurant

Diamond District Partners just lined up another restaurant for its massive development in the works around CarMax Park: Makers Union, an American fare concept out of the D.C. area.

Why it matters: While the restaurant likely won’t open for nearly two years, it’s a big development for the highly anticipated new neighborhood.

State of play: Makers Union is from NoVa-based Thompson Restaurants, the same group behind Matchbox pizza joint, which had a four-year run in Short Pump before closing in 2020.

  • At Makers Union, the focus seems to be on everything but pizza, per a review of their menus. The restaurant has a little bit of everything else.

On the menu: Sandwiches and burgers ($17–$28 in NoVa), bowls and salads ($16–$24) and entrees like pasta, steak, lamb chops, fish, and chicken and waffles ($23–$46).

  • The restaurant offers brunch, a full bar, mocktails and what appears to be a very stellar daily happy hour (3–6pm) with $6 glasses of wine, $8 espresso martinis and cocktails and a whole tower of french fries for $9.

Zoom in: Makers Union will open in the Gateway Retail Building, which will rise near the CarMax Park entrance, joining an unnamed sports bar from Richmond-based Eat Restaurants Partners (the folks behind PBR, Fat Dragon and Lucky AF)…
