WASHINGTON – In a striking turn of events, a father and son from Richmond, Virginia, have pleaded guilty to serious felony charges stemming from their involvement in the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. The breach notably disrupted a joint session of Congress tasked with certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

Farhad Azari, 63, and his son Farbod Azari, 32, admitted to one count each of civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon. U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth is set to sentence them on May 21, 2024.

Court documents revealed that on January 6, 2021, the Azaris traveled from Richmond to Washington, D.C., to partake in the protests. Their actions escalated at the Capitol grounds, where they moved to the front lines of the rioting crowd. Farbod Azari was seen gesturing at police officers, spitting in their direction, and throwing a water bottle at them.
