American Red Cross experiences emergency blood shortage

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The American Red Cross has announced that it is experiencing an emergency blood shortage .

A spokesperson for the organization said it is seeing the lowest number of people giving blood in the last 20 years.

The organization said blood and platelet donations are needed to help alleviate the shortage and ensure lifesaving medical procedures proceed without delay.

There are many different donation locations throughout Richmond. Here are just a few with open appointments within the next week:

  • UNOS , 700 North 4th St.
  • Emerywood Blood Donation Center , 2825 Emerywood Pkwy
  • The Pace Center , 700 W Franklin St.
  • Bon Air Christian Church , 2071 Buford Rd.

The Red Cross asks that anyone who may be eligible make an appointment to give blood or platelets. An appointment can be made by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting its website or calling 1-800-733-2767.
