Richmond Police warns the public of phone scam posing as officers

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department is warning people of a phone scam pretending to be a police officer.

According to the department , scammers are calling people using a Richmond Police sergeant’s name in order to claim they have outstanding warrants and demanding payment to resolve them.

The warning comes after a Richmond Healthcare worker was scammed out of $8,000 following a phone call where two people pretended to be Richmond Police third precinct officers.

The department is asking individuals who may receive these phone calls to not send any money in response as they are a scam. They remind that the Richmond Police Department will not call individuals to collect fees, fines or payments ordered by a court.

Anyone who believes that they have a warrant on file can go to the Richmond Police Department’s Headquarters, located on 200 W. Grace St., or any Richmond Police precinct to inquire.
