New statue in Richmond’s West End commemorating racial integration of Westhampton Junior High School

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A new sculpture was revealed in Richmond’s West End to acknowledge the Westhampton School’s story of racial integration, ‘ Strides ‘.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30 the new statue was revealed at the corner of Libbie Avenue and Patterson Avenue which brings awareness to the story of the Westhampton School and Jane Cooper Johnson , formerly known as Daisy Jane Cooper.

Daisy Jane Cooper, who at the time was 12-years-old, was the first African American student at Westhampton Junior High in 1961. Cooper’s enrollment at the school followed a legal three-year legal case as well as a U.S. District Court order to desegregate.
