‘Super Freak: The Rick James Story’ is making its way to the Altria Theater

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Altria Theater is getting “Super Freak”-y this spring with a new musical.

“Super Freak: The Rick James Story” is coming to the Altria Theater this spring, celebrating the King of Punk-Funk.

Rick James, the sensational and provocative musician took over the airwaves with his hit songs like “Super Freak,” “Give It to Me Baby” and “Mary Jane” — which led to him becoming a funk and groove trendsetter of the 80s.

The “Super Freak: The Rick James Story” musical takes the audience on a flamboyant ride, as it explores the life and legacy of one of Motown’s hottest artists of the 80s.

The musical is produced by Rick James’ only daughter, Ty James, and writer, director and producer Je’Caryous Johnson.

Super Freak: The Rick James Story” will take place various times on Thursday, April 18 at the Altria Theatre, located at 6. North Laurel Street.

Tickets will go on sale Friday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m., and can be purchased online , by phone at 800-514-3849, or in person from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Altria Theater Box Office.
