Car hits stopped vehicle on I-95 in Chester, killing passenger and injuring driver

A Hopewell man is facing charges in a weekend traffic crash that killed one person and injured another.

The incident happened shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday on southbound Interstate 295 near the state Route 288 interchange in Chester. State police said the driver of a 1994 Honda Civic ran into a 2010 Mercury Milan that had stopped on the right shoulder of the highway.

A passenger in the stopped vehicle was killed. She was identified as Carilynn A. Christie, 23, of Petersburg.

She was not wearing a seat belt.

The stopped car’s driver, 21-year-old Kweli J. Grooms, also of Petersburg, was seriously injured. He was wearing a seat belt.

Thomas J. Calix Lisboa, 25, of Hopewell, was identified as the driver of the Civic. He was wearing his seat belt and suffered minor injuries.

State police charged Calix Lisboa with reckless driving, driving with a suspended or revoked license and driving an uninspected car.

Fatigue is being looked at as a possible factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
