Richmond-area native becomes member of elite U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Richmond area native and 2023 Midlothian High School graduate has become a member of the elite U.S. Navy’s Ceremonial Guard, according to U.S. Navy spokesperson.

Alphonso Gray joined the Navy as an airman six months ago. Following an intensive 10-week training program, he is now a member of the official honor guard.

“I joined the Navy to better my life,” Gray said. “I also wanted to have the opportunity to travel around the world by visiting Navy ports all over the world.”

The U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard was established in 1931. Its members participate in a variety of prestigious ceremonies, including presidential inaugurations and the arrival ceremonies of foreign officials, according to the spokesperson.

Sailors like Gray do not apply for the honor guard, they are hand-selected during boot camp.

“Strict military order and discipline, combined with teamwork, allow the Ceremonial Guard to fulfill their responsibilities with pride and determination,” the spokesperson said. “They are experts in the art of close order drill, coordination and timing.”
