PETERSBURG — In late February, Croaker’s Spot restaurant will host a visit from America’s Best Restaurants [ABR]. Popular dishes will be highlighted along with an extensive on-camera interview with owners Sherita McGowan and Leroy Royal about the restaurant’s special place in the community.
The national media and marketing company will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant located inside the historic Farmers Market building which has been around since 1879. ABR spotlights local, independently-owned restaurants.
Croaker’s Spot is named after Mr. Croaker who was born in the Jackson Ward neighborhood of Richmond. Nicknamed for the croaking sound of his voice and inviting laugh, Croaker was a friend of starving artists, jazz musicians and other creative entrepreneurs whom he met while traveling up and down the East Coast in the early part of the 20th century. He established the first Croaker’s restaurant in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. It was frequented by his compatriots in the creative arts.
