Sussex man charged with first-degree murder in connection to 2023 shooting in Hopewell

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — A Sussex County man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to a fatal shooting that took place in October 2023 in Hopewell.

According to the Hopewell Police Department, 27-year-old Devon Lamont Mabry of Sussex County was arraigned on Wednesday, June 26, on the charges of first-degree murder and using a firearm while committing a felony in connection to the shooting death of 21-year-old Marciano Thorne of Chesterfield County.

Mabry, who was already being held at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County for an unrelated matter, is being held without bond.

At around 9:40 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, Hopewell Police officers responded to the 1100 block of High Avenue after it was reported that a man had been shot and was unconscious.

The officers found the victim, identified as Thorne, with multiple gunshot wounds and he was taken to Tri-Cities Hospital in Petersburg, where he later died.

It was determined during the investigation that the shooting took place at the intersection of Winston Churchill Drive and Liberty Avenue.
