Richmond Police officer charged with assault in connection to April arrest

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — An officer with the Richmond Police Department has been charged with assault in connection to an arrest he assisted with in April.

According to the department, 51-year-old Paul Jenkins of Richmond was charged with misdemeanor simple assault following a grand jury indictment on Tuesday, Aug. 6. This charge relates to an April DUI arrest, during which Jenkins was assisting other officers.

“During the arrest, the officer attempted to remove the arrestee from the transport wagon and the arrestee suffered an abrasion to his head,” the department said in an Aug. 7 press release.

Officers filed a report of the injury to patrol supervision, according to police. A review was conducted by the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility, as well as the Chief of Police. The results of this review were then given to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Former Virginia first lady Roxane Gilmore has died

Jenkins is currently on administrative leave with pay, which is standard policy, according to the department. He has been with Richmond Police for 21 years.
