‘Nationwide shelter musical chairs game’: Richmond SPCA aids as Debby leaves animal shelters full

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As the aftermath of Debby continues to affect the South, the Richmond SPCA is mobilizing to assist animals displaced by the storm.

This is in coordination with the Bissell Pet Foundation , as the aftermath of the storm is still unfolding.

“These are shelters that are in the path of flooding,” said Tabitha Treeloar, Communications Director of Richmond SPCA. “While their facilities may not necessarily be flooding, what they’re dealing with is that their communities need them to take in additional pets for more temporary situations after the flooding.”

That is where the SPCA comes in, Treeloar said.

“It’s kind of a big nationwide shelter musical chairs game,” Treeloar said. “We’re going to free an empty kennel in a shelter in either South Carolina or Georgia by placing the animals who are currently in our shelter here in Richmond.”

Treeloar said that’s why it’s important to come to the discounted “Empty the Shelters” adoption event this week at the Richmond SPCA. Through Friday, August 16, adoption fees for all pets six months and older will be only $25.
