EZ Pass ‘smishing’ scam returns, prompting warning from Virginia Department of Transportation

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — EZ Pass users are being warned of a ‘smishing’ scam aimed at collecting money for unpaid toll charges.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) took to Facebook Monday, posting a screenshot of a fictitious text a driver received.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines ‘smishing’ as scams that happen through text message.

FROM APRIL: Drivers beware: VDOT warns of smishing scam targeting Virginia drivers

VDOT encourages those who have received texts like these to contact their customer service team to validate the message. Folks can do so by clicking here .

The agency is also directing drivers who believe they are impacted to file their complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center by including the phone number of the text along with the web link listed.
