Richmond attorney wins bass fishing competition in New York

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WRIC) — A civil litigation attorney from Richmond has won the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain in upstate New York.

Ed Loughran III finished the four-day tournament having caught a total of 80 pounds and 12 ounces worth of fish — just one ounce more than the runner up, Canadian Chris Johnston. It is the second time an Elite Series event has ever been decided by just one ounce.

“I had zero thought that I had won. I was hoping to just stay in the Top 5,” Loughran said. “It’s unbelievable. I’ve never won a big tournament. I’ve had Top 5s in big tournaments … but I’m always a little short. I didn’t have any realistic expectation of winning one, but after yesterday I thought I might have a chance.”

Loughran won $100,000 in prize money for winning the tournament — his first ever victory in the Elite Series.
