HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The BMX competition Royal Rumble took place at Taylor Farm Park over the weekend.

Taylor Farm Park welcomed BMX riders from all over the world on Saturday, Aug. 31 for the 4th annual Royal Rumble, hosted by the Richmond based non-profit RADshare.

According to Steve Crandall, program director for RADshare, it was estimated that hundreds of people showed up for the event, which provided attendees with free helmets, bikes and other prizes.

“We just try to create a community atmosphere where everybody feels welcome, everyone has a good time,” Crandall said. “Everyone is supporting each other, all different types of riders, all different skill levels, all different genders, people from all over the world — literally – people from Japan, from England, from all over the United States.”

There were several pro-riders at the competition as well, including Gary Young, an X Games gold medalist from San Diego and Nina Buitrago, a pro BMX rider.

“I think what this means for the sport, is it really shows how inclusive and supportive it is and how great of a community it is,” Crandall said. “Also, just how down to earth the pros are in supporting the young riders and helping encourage the next generations to get involved and, you know, find some joy in bike riding.”
