The Jolly Rancher Grape Challenge is sending Virginia children to the hospital with burns

The latest TikTok challenge proves dangerous

At least three Virginia children were hospitalized with burns after attempting the latest TikTok challenge. Dr. Michael Feldman with the Evans-Haynes Burn Center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health shared details with WRIC.

He said TikTok videos encourage viewers to melt Jolly Rancher candies on the stove before pouring the hot liquid over grapes. The hot solution is then supposed to cool in the freezer.

The hot solution has burned people

Unfortunately, three Richmond children were burned before they could get the mixture to the fridge. The Post Gazette reports that a Pittsburg mother said the hot liquid quickly became hard on her son’s leg, and when she attempted to scrape it off, it took some of his skin.

Dr. Feldman warns that children or adults who want to try the Jolly Rancher Grapes Challenge should use containers with heat-proof edges, and adults should monitor children closely. He added that anyone who experiences burns should see a certified burn doctor right away.
