Judge denies bid to pause Richmond’s $10 land sale for new Planned Parenthood health center

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – A Richmond judge denied an effort from a faith-based group that opposes abortion to temporarily keep the city from transferring land for a Planned Parenthood clinic for $10.

In July , the Richmond City Council approved a plan for the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood to buy property on Chamberlayne Avenue to open a new health center. Planned Parenthood has to pay to demolish the old school that sits on the property.

Planned Parenthood provides several services, including birth control, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings and more. Per the nonprofit’s 2023 annual report , more than two million patients were served, and an estimated 325,000 unintended pregnancies were averted by Planned Parenthood services that year.

The Founding Freedoms Law Center (FFLC), the legal arm of the Family Foundation of Virginia , sued on behalf of Dr. Sheila Furey, who has a psychiatry practice in Chesterfield County and claims she wasn’t allowed to buy the property because the city moved forward without a public bidding process.
