23-year-old Hanover driver dead after running off road, hitting several trees

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 23-year-old Hanover County man is dead after police say he ran his car off the road and hit multiple trees Sunday night.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, deputies with the Hanover County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 5100 block of Sandy Valley Road in Mechanicsville for report of a single-vehicle crash.

According to investigators, 23-year-old Thomas Andrew Gilbert of the Mechanicsville area was driving a 2018 Ford Fiesta east on Sandy Valley Road when he ran off the road, hitting several trees. He died as a result of his injuries.

“Investigators are still collecting information to determine the circumstances that led to this crash,” the sheriff’s office said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Thomas Gilbert during this difficult time.”

Gilbert’s death marks the third deadly crash on the same night in the Richmond area. Two pedestrians — a 15-year-old boy and a 68-year-old woman — were killed on Sunday in crashes in Henrico and Chesterfield counties, respectively.
