Richmonders urged to stock emergency kit, plan for natural disasters

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Richmond is urging its residents to make sure they are sufficiently prepared for an emergency situation.

The Richmond Department of Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response is urging Richmonders to plan ahead and prepare for natural disasters as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season reaches its peak.

“Emergency preparedness is not just about individual actions but also about collective responsibility,” said Stephen Willoughby, the department’s director, in a statement. “City residents can play a crucial role in fostering a culture of preparedness, encouraging others to take action, and fostering a sense of unity in times of crisis.”

The department said residents should build an emergency kit with at least three days worth of supplies, develop an evacuation and shelter plan and prepare a list of emergency contacts and emergency services.
