‘We tried to get ahead of this’: Richmond Public Schools bus driver union responds to late paychecks

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras addressed concerns regarding school bus drivers in a press conference on Monday.

On Monday, Sept. 16, Kamras answered questions about late paychecks and buses.

Some bus drivers received late paychecks on Friday, Sept. 13. On Monday, more than 25% of the drivers, 35 of the 130 in the district called out . Kamras blames technology for the pay problem.

“I’m not gonna hypothesize about why they’re out, but I do think it’s fair to say that folks were frustrated about the last pay period,” Kamras said.

“Would you come to work again after not being compensated or not being fairly compensated,” said local 804 RPS bus transportation representative Rahsaan Wynn.

Wynn said they were concerned about something like this happening with the new system, and voiced concerns to Richmond Public Schools.

Typically, bus drivers get their paychecks Friday mornings. But last week, according to Kamras, some didn’t get theirs until the afternoon. And some drivers reported not getting their earned overtime pay , possibly causing frustrated employees to call out on Monday.
