Plenty opens Virginia’s first indoor strawberry farm, enhancing local agriculture

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — On Tuesday, Plenty Unlimited Inc. opened its first indoor strawberry farm facility in Chesterfield.

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Plenty Unlimited Inc. celebrated the grand opening of its first indoor vertical berry farm in Chesterfield. Special guests at the celebration included Governor Youngkin, Senator Coyner, as well as other county leaders and officials.

According to Plenty Richmond, the new facility is curated to producer over 4 million pounds of strawberries each year in a less than 40,000 sqare-foot space by growing vertically on towers that are 30 feet tall. The first set of strawberries from the farm is expected to be available in early 2025.

“With agriculture serving as the Commonwealth’s largest private sector industry, Plenty choosing Virginia for the world’s first farm to grow indoor, vertically farmed berries at scale reinforces Virginia’s leading role in the controlled environment agriculture industry,” Youngkin said. “Plenty’s farm will boost local agriculture production and drive economic development, all while diversifying against risks and protecting the environment.
