Virginia business experts warn consumers about supply chain effects as dock workers strike

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia business experts are warning consumers of the ripple effects the longshoremen strike could have on the supply chain — all the way down to your wallet.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Central Virginia president and CEO Barry Moore said supplies will become scarcer as thousands of dock workers along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico are on the picket line, demanding higher wages and a ban on certain types of automation.

“Things are going to be hard to find, like it was back four years ago,” Moore said. “We don’t need to be in that position again. We’re still getting on our feet. It was a terrible time. And I hate for America to go back to that.”

The United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) failed to reach a new labor agreement by the deadline on Tuesday, Oct. 1, leading to the first strike by the port workers’ union in nearly 50 years.
