Join Lakemont Elementary School at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 14 to honor the legacy of Ruby Bridges and her courageous journey toward desegregation.
“Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day” is celebrated annually nation-wide on November 14th to honor Ruby Bridges, a civil rights activist who was the first Black child to attend an all-white school in the South on November 14, 1960. 6-year-old Bridges had to be escorted on her walk to school by four US Marshals as she was greeted by a mob of angry white parents and protesters, many of whom threatened her and threw things at her.
Ruby Bridges is now 70 years old and is a well known civil rights icon, activist, speaker and author who has written several books about her experience, including Through My Eyes and This Is Your Time. Bridges also created the Ruby Bridges Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that fights against racism and advocates for equal rights.
Lakemont Elementary, located at 51 Gibbons Ave, will host a march in Ruby Bridges’ honor on Thursday starting at 8:45 a.m. at the kickball field . Anyone who would like to take part in honoring her legacy is invited to participate. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple and brings signs in support of Bridges.
