New York Deli in Richmond, Virginia opened in 1929, making it the city’s oldest restaurant. In 1934, the Jewish deli moved to its current location at 2920 W. Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23221, and has been operating there since then.
New York Deli is a true Carytown landmark. The hours are:
- Monday – Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.
- Thursday and Friday: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Saturday Brunch: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Sunday: 9 a.m. to 12 a.m.
- Sunday Brunch: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Although the deli has expanded and been remodeled over the years, it remains a true Richmond gathering spot. With an emphasis on affordability and quality, the restaurant draws a mix of guests. According to local legend, Navy seamen from the University of Richmond V-12 Navy College Training Program would frequent the New York Deli and order the then-nameless sandwich. It eventually became known as a Sailor Sandwich during World War II.
