Mix of rain, snow is coming to our area Sunday. We just don’t know what or how much yet

PETERSBURG – The National Weather Service said Friday that while “confidence is increasing” for the possibility of wintry precipitation to fall here Sunday, it remains difficult to predict how much and what type will fall.

So, while we wait, what is the buzzword for the weekend? “Weather-aware.”

A major winter storm will descend upon the contiguous U.S. this weekend, bringing with it colder than average temperatures for this time of year, according to an alert from the NWS office in Wakefield. While the cold will not be record-setting, it will produce enough chill to possibly bring as much as a foot of snow to northern and southwestern Virginia, and descending amounts the more south and east you get into the commonwealth.

“While confidence is increasing for a wintery [sic] precip across our area Sun night & Mon, there is still some uncertainty in exact impacts & precip types,” NWS Wakefield posted on X (formerly Twitter). “There is a tight gradient of possible impacts from [north to south], but this could change over the next few days, so remain weather-aware.”
