Little named a Nurse Educator of the Year

Lucy Little, lead faculty for the Paul D. Camp Community College associate degree nursing program, has been named a Nurse Educator of the Year by the Virginia Nurses Foundation (VNAF).

A college news release noted that Little recently received the award at the VNAF gala in Richmond.

Little has been a member of the nursing faculty at Camp since 2013. She is responsible for maintaining the college’s skills and simulation labs, and working collaboratively with department colleagues to ensure a comprehensive, immersive skills and simulation environment for Camp’s nursing students. Although Camp is a small college, the nursing labs are well-equipped, well-organized, well-maintained and well-operated under Little’s leadership. Her development of simulation and evidence-based practice for the nursing program has contributed significantly to student engagement, student learning and student success.

Little’s recent accomplishments include the following:

  • Stepping up to support and sustain the nursing programs during vacancies in faculty and dean positions.
  • Supporting a continued partnership with emergency services in the region for conducting an annual mass-casualty incident drill, which most recently included bringing the Virginia Commonwealth University Life Evac Helicopter and team to the drill on the college’s Franklin campus. She coordinates with the first responders in the community, the administration of the institution, students and other faculty members.
  • Developing a schedule to have students exposed to community health in collaboration with Old Dominion University’s mobile health unit, which provides services to the Franklin community from the college’s parking lot two days per month.
  • Engaging with the facilities planning team on the renovation design and equipping of the college’s new Nursing and Allied Health Professions Education and Training Facility.
  • Leading or participating in a Nursing Student Bootcamp that helps guide incoming students through the process of what it means to be a nursing student; helping students to navigate dosage calculations, study habits, note-taking and mandatory uniforms. She also hosts a new student orientation each fall semester.
  • Recent promotion to Camp’s 12-month nursing lead faculty position.
