Hopewell hires new city attorney. He was the only one to apply for the job

HOPEWELL – Hopewell’s freshly minted city attorney takes office Wednesday, two days after City Council finalized an offer to the only applicant for the job. Anthony Bessette, formerly the senior assistant county attorney in Albemarle County, is Hopewell’s first full-time attorney since Danielle Smith left early last year. Since Smith’s departure, Beverly Burton had come on board on an acting basis and expressed a desire to leave by the end of 2024. Between Burton’s departure and Bessette’s arrival, Hopewell had a temporary deal with Richmond law firm Sands Anderson to serve as official counsel and City Council parliamentarian. A…..
