‘Ridiculous’: Agencies warn people not to fall for toll charge text scams

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – One morning, Richmond resident Tyler Sapp woke up to a text message on his phone.

“Some sort of notification from E-Z Pass, letting me know that I have to pay off my tolls,” he said.

Sapp acted on the text about the unpaid toll, which was a scam.

“I kind of fell for it,” he said. “I called my credit card company immediately and got it blocked, and it did block a charge. They tried to add the card to Apple Pay quickly after, but thankfully, I blocked it.”…
