During the investigation, witnesses stated that the driver of a Subaru Legacy ran the red light at a high rate of speed and hit the Mazda. Upon questioning the Subaru driver, the West Springfield police say that he ignored the officers while he talked on his phone, was unsteady on his feet, and had a slurred speech.

Due to several indicators of being under the influence of alcohol, officers arrested 34-year-old Wesley Mendez of Alexandria, Virginia. He was charged with OUI liquor resulting in serious injury, fail to stop for a red light, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.
