‘Today was so special’: 5 terminated RPS bus drivers reinstated after months-long battle

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Five veteran Richmond Public School (RPS) bus drivers — known as the ‘RPS 5’ — are officially returning to work following a 3-month battle for reinstatement.

8News was the first to report on the RPS 5’s firings. The drivers said they were terminated on April 25 afterthey advocated for overtime pay outside of City Hall on April 8 before heading into a school board meeting. They said other bus drivers were there, but only the five were fired.

The terminations stemmed from what RPS considered an illegal strike — a violation of the drivers’ contract — but the five drivers maintained they were wrongfully fired…
