Virginians wanted for study evaluating multi-cancer detection test

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Researchers with the Virginia Cancer Screening Research Network are putting a new way of screening for cancer to the test.

Through the Vanguard Study, they will see if Multi-Cancer Detection tests (MCD) can effectively check for ten different types of cancer, including breast, prostate, and lung. MCD tests work to identify biological substances released in the bloodstream by cancer cells.

“It has the potential to have a tremendous impact on our ability to detect cancer early when we can make a difference and improve health outcomes,” Dr. Alex Krist, who is a co-principal investigator for the Virginia CSRN, said. “But we do need to get the science and data to show: Does it help people, and is it beneficial in addition to what we are already doing with screenings?”…
