Richmond’s newish 686 area code still hasn’t been assigned to anyone yet, SCC officials tell Axios.
Why it matters: Monday is 804 Day in RVA, so it’s worth celebrating the fact that 804 is still the only area code in use here.
Catch up quick: The SCC announced in 2022 that the 804 was running out of numbers and, therefore, the region would need a new area code to accommodate all numbers clogging the lines.
- The Richmond region was assigned 686 to join 804 as the digits covering the area, which runs from Petersburg to King William, plus, inexplicably, the Northern Neck.
- The new code doesn’t get assigned until 804 is “exhausted,” something officials said in 2022 would likely happen by last year. Then it was pushed to early 2025. Clearly, neither exhaustion date happened.
