VCU removes references to race from scholarship language

Virginia Commonwealth University is removing language referring to race from some scholarships previously reserved for students from specific demographic groups, replacing it with broad language designed to capture students’ backgrounds in other ways.

As VPM News previously reported, seven scholarships were identified for “immediate action” in a review of scholarships earlier this year. Now, three of these scholarships have had new language changes approved while the other four are still in limbo.

Two are waiting on donors to approve the suggested language changes while the other two require a petition to the courts since the donor is now deceased, according to a VCU spokesperson. Until these processes are complete, these four scholarships are on pause…
