Richmond is allocating more than $9 million from its Affordable Housing Trust Fund (AHTF) to expand and preserve affordable housing options across the city. The funding includes $7 million for eight housing projects that will add nearly 600 affordable units, plus $2.2 million to strengthen the Healthy Homes Rehabilitation program, which offers grants to qualifying homeowners for critical repairs.
Launched in 2024, the Healthy Homes program aims to improve the sustainability, safety, and affordability of existing housing, allowing residents to remain in their homes while extending the lifespan of the city’s housing stock. The additional funds will enable the program to serve more households citywide.
The selected housing projects—chosen from over 20 applicants—span multiple districts and were evaluated on readiness, location, target population, and developer capacity. Awards include:
- Genesis Properties (District 6): 77 units, $1,000,000
- Maggie Walker Community Land Trust (District 6): 7 units, $175,000
- The Hanson Company (District 6): 50 units, $689,026
- SupportWorks Housing (District 6): 82 units, $1,000,000
- Elmington (District 5): 246 units, $1,500,000
- Maggie Walker Community Land Trust (District 4): 20 units, $450,000
- Pennrose (District 2): 50 units, $1,000,000
- Douglas Development (District 2): 48 units, $1,200,000
Mayor Danny Avula emphasized that tackling the city’s housing crisis requires both new development and preservation of existing homes. “Our City needs new, affordable units to accommodate a growing population, but it also needs to protect the people and the homes that are already here,” Avula said…
