Arrest made in Hampton attempted robbery that led to murder investigation

HAMPTON, Va. — A Petersburg man was arrested for an attempted robbery in Hampton last month that led to a shootout between the suspect and the victim. Officers who responded then found another person shot to death nearby.

According to the Hampton Police Division, authorities received a call about an attempted robbery in the 400 block of Marion Road early on the morning of August 29. Police said a delivery driver had returned to his vehicle when an armed suspect approached him. The victim pulled out his own gun, and the two exchanged gunfire. The driver was not injured and is cooperating with detectives.

Officers began a K-9 search for the suspect, and during that search were called to a suspicious vehicle in the first block of Sargeant Street. There, they found a man, later identified as 35-year-old Anthony Clark, on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene…
