Volunteers for a national wildlife refuge set out for a day of celebration. They got a shut down.

The Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge has a lot of friends. They volunteer to construct piers, bridges and outbuildings and playgrounds. They clear trails and plant native trees.

For their sweat and dedication they won the national Refuge Friends Group of the Year. But their celebration went sideways.

The weather was perfect for the volunteers to celebrate and for kids to be outside planting trees and learning about nature instead of reading about it in a classroom. One-hundred holes were already dug and trees standing by…
